August 2011’s growth rate of just 4.5% was the slowest pace of expansion since Sep 2008 and there have been only two months of double-digit passenger growth this year. Passenger traffic in China has grown by an average of 15.3% p/a over the past decade, or around three times the world average for the same period. So 2011 is definitely a below par performance.
In the last days of November, the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) coordinated several bilateral meetings with main Chinese airlines and airports to promote new air links.
The main goals of this agenda were to establish contact with the country’s most important airport management organizations and to promote air travel links between Barcelona Airport and China, especially the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
In view of this, the representatives of the Committee who participated in these efforts presented Barcelona’s economic development and the institutional and financial links between Catalonia and China, along with Barcelona’s primary promotion projects, focusing particularly on business, tourism and trade sectors.
Furthermore, BARDC detailed the importance of indirect traffic between China and Catalonia, stressing the number of Chinese residing in Catalonia and its surrounding areas as well as on exports, imports, and other pertinent data confirming the viability of a Barcelona route.
In order to show maximum institutional support and to promote operations with Barcelona Airport, members of the Committee presented the capacities and tools which each BARDC member can use to promote long-distance airline operations and the development of projects to improve airport connectivity.
