Barcelona is a large metropolis of the Western Mediterranean, in the South of the European continent. It is one of the most dynamic cities in Spain, a generator of economic activity and a driving force for innovative projects.

It is the political, economic and cultural capital of Catalonia, a region located in the North East of the Iberian Peninsula, and the second most populated city in Spain, with 1,615,908 residents (2008). Within a relatively small area, of just over 100 km2, the city concentrates great cultural richness, receives incessant economic activity and is home to people from five different continents.



Barcelona is the main city of a metropolitan region that concentrates a total population of 4,928,852 residents and is ranked number 51 in the world for its number of residents (United Nations, Department of Social and Economic Affairs, Population Division). It is also the eleventh most populated city of the European Union.
