Continental Airlines has announced that during the summer season of 2008 will increase the number of frequencies of her flights to New York (Newark)n from the eight it currently has to 14 (twice daily).
During 2007 the increase of traffic between Barcelona and North America was very sharp, with an increase of 28% over the previous year. This growth was based on the increased number of frequencies and capacity of three companies (Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines and US Airways) and the new flights operated by Air Transat (Montreal and Toronto) and Aeromexico (Mexico DF). The overall increase surpassed 85.000 passengers, placing the total number of direct travellers between Barcelona and North America at 380.000. This data represents an increase of 78% of the direct traffic between those two locations since 2005, when the BARDC was created.
The increase in the frequencies of Continental Airlines shows the strength in demand between New York and Barcelona, and shows that there is still market to be covered in North America. The incipient demand facilitates that companies like Continental Airlines decide to keep increasing their flight offer from Barcelona. This develops into net gains for both the company and the markets served by her. Continental’s case is paradigmatic, since her flight frequencies have not stopped increasing since it started flying the route in 2006.
The BARDC considers this marked increase in Continental’s frequencies to be extremely positive, and expects it to be maintained during the following years due to the market dynamics.
