The Canadian company Air Transat has started flying again its routes between Barcelona and Canada (Montreal and Toronto). The routes started operating again on April the 7th. From April 7th to the 4th of May there will be one flight per week. Later on, the frequencies will be increased to twice per week, one of them with continuity to Toronto. A third flight from the 19th of June onwards, will connect Barcelona and Toronto with a direct flight. The flight will be flown by an Airbus A310. it will have a capacity of 269 seats per flight, 20 in business class and 249 in economy class.
Given the market response during the previous summer season, with almost 16.000 passengers using these routes, Air Transat, has decided to reopen and increase her operations in El Prat for this season of summer 2008. This increase means that during this summer 2008 season, Barcelona will have more frequencies and for a longer period of time than during the previous period when the Air Transat flights were active.
The route between Barcelona and Montreal increases its frequencies while the Toronto route is a novelty of the current exercise. This increase in the direct connections shows Air Transat’s interest for the Catalan market, and confirms the strength of the Barcelona routes that the company flies, and its intention to keep flying in one of the European airports with the potential to develop a high growth in international and transcontinental traffic.
The Barcelona Air Route Development Committee shows its satisfaction because the reopening of these flights confirms the potential that Barcelona’s airport has. It obtains its targets for passenger traffic through international companies like Air Transat that bet strongly for Catalonia’s capital city. Regarding the future, the company has also shown its preference for keeping the frequencies open during the winter season if the route consolidates a reasonable demand level for that season.
